AmTiquing Trivia: Red-Breasted Nuthatch
Trade Card Illustration for Arm & Hammer and Cow Brand baking sodas; art by Louis Agassiz Fuertes This bird is easily distinguished from his larger relative, the White-breasted Nuthatch, by its smaller size, reddish-brown breast, and the black stripe across the face. It is often observed in the company of its fellows. Of coniferous pine trees it is especially fond, consuming large quantities of the seeds of the cones. Like the White-breasted, it extracts many forms of injurious insects and their eggs from the bark of trees. The nest, which is a hole or stump of a tree, is made of grasses and feathers. The four to seven eggs are white, thickly speckled with brown. The ClassyArts Digital Image Collection
